Ray Ahearn

Ray Ahearn lived an extraordinary life marked by resilience, determination and a deep commitment to his community. His lasting legacy is the establishment of the Ray Ahearn Charitable Trust, created to support the Warrnambool and district community he called home.

Raised on his parents' small farm at Tower Hill, Ray completed his schooling in the Warrnambool district. From an early age, he lived with a significant physical disability and was later diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a progressive genetic condition that eventually confined him to a wheelchair. Despite this, Ray refused to let his disability define him, believing that everyone faces challenges and it is how we respond that matters.

Determined to build an independent and meaningful life, Ray studied accounting by correspondence and established his own bookkeeping service. At just 18, he began what would become a 48-year professional partnership with local businessman Frank Ryan. While working full-time, Ray completed an accounting degree and became a Certified Practising Accountant, playing a key role in the growth of one of the region's major transport businesses. He retired in 2010.

Ray was deeply involved in community life, contributing his financial expertise and leadership to many local organisations. He served in various voluntary roles, including as treasurer for community groups and as a board member of the City Memorial Bowls Club, and was actively involved in the RSL and other community associations.

Guided by a strong sense of social justice, Ray established the Ray Ahearn Charitable Trust in 2017 to support financially and physically disadvantaged members of the local community. Until his passing, Ray remained actively involved in the trust's direction. Through his generosity and the significant contribution of his estate, the trust continues to provide a lasting benefit to the Warrnambool and district community.
